SUNNYVALE SERTOMA Club meets Wednesday 7:15 a.m. at the American Diner Restaurant, 415 E. El Camino Real, Sunnyvale, CA near Cezanne Dr .
Our club is in the Wild West District of the Mountain West Region of Sertoma International and home to Foundation District Representative Don Carothers.
  
Sertoma National Heritage Essay Awards Breakfast - May 20, 2009

Jim Moll , President of Sunnyvale Sertoma, welcomed all to the Twenty-Seventh Annual Sertoma National Heritage Essay Awards Breakfast sponsored by the Sertoma Club of Sunnvale and the Sunnyvale School District. This is the third year that the presenations were preceeded by an excellent breakfast by the American Diner.

Sertoma Club President, Jim Moll, called the meeting to order and Sertoma VP of Programs, Walter Wolles led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Sertoma member Don Carothers gave the Invocation. Jim then introduced our honored guests, Tony Spitaleri, Mayor of Sunnyvale, Anita Herrmann, Board of Education Member, and Dr. Benjamin Picard, Superintendent of the Sunnyvale Schools of the presenting students.

This award breakfast honors the top three essay award winners from the Fifth Grade and from the Eighth Grade. Award Certificates and monetary prizes are presented to the six winners.

Sertoma members Andrea and Jerry Nieto greeting early arriving guests for the Heritage Awards Breakfast. President, Jim Moll, gave a background on "What is Sertoma?" and its ongoing commitment to education about the role of our American Heritage of Freedom and Liberty to all Citizens.
  
Program Coodinaator, Sarah Roseen prefixed the presentation with a discussion of the guidelines and procedures used in this years contests. Fifth Grade Award winner, Jenifer Anguiano, received the 3rd Place Award for her presentation on "My Dad Pedro"
Fifth Grade Award winner, Alexis Chera, received the 2nd Place Award for her presentation titled "My Grandma " Fifth Grade Award winner, Gloria Cheng received the 1st Place Award for her unnamed presentation.
Eighth Grade Award winner, Monisha Gopalakrihnan, received the 3rd Place Award for her presentation on "Freedom for all". Eighth Grade Award winner, Julie Flores received the 2nd Place Award for her essay on "Papa Tin".
Eighth Grade Award winner, Christa Atkins, received the 1st Place Award for her presentation on "American Heritage".. Superintendent, Dr. Picard, thanked the club for their ongoing support for the Heritage Program.
Sunnyvale Mayor, Tony Spitaleri, remarked on the importance of education and writing skills Associate Superintendent of Curriculum, Claire Castagna, congratualated the winners on their skill achievements.

Sunnyvale School District Program Coordinator was Sarah Roseen.

Essay Judges were Principals and Fifth and Eighth Grade Teachers, Sarah Roseen and Jessica Boschen

The Sertoma Heritage Committee were Coordinator Andrea Nieto, Programs, Pete Goodell, and Photographer, Bob DeGrasse

  The total Awards Breakfast attendance was 55 and breakfast service was excellent.
