Regular Meeting - 10 Members Wine - Jim Moll
Speaker was Dan Hildebrand discussing is unique experience as a soldier and slave
to the Germans during World War II. He was captured during the Battle of the Little
Bulge and placed in a prison camp for a short period of time.
 
The prisoners were then forced to march (without shoes) to a location where the
Germans were excavating a large mine shaft with the believed intenstion of building
a biodiesel plant for fuel. By the time they were rescued, most who had not died,
were starving and had lost a great deal of weight.
 
After the war, Dan was educated by the GI bill and became a Physical Scientist.         
Before he retired from SRI, he learned of a German ruling that all prisoners          
employed as slaves were entitled to wages for their labors. After learning of          
this he was able to get a tax free check for his labor and hardship. Full details         
can now be read in the book Soldiers and Slaves by Rodger Cohen (Knopp).
